Understanding the EDT Programme: A Complete Guide

Back to all articles

The Essential Driver Training (EDT) programme was introduced by the RSA to ensure all new drivers receive a minimum standard of professional instruction.

The programme consists of 12 one-hour lessons, each covering a specific topic. These range from basic vehicle controls to more advanced skills like motorway driving and sharing the road with other users.

Lesson Structure: Each EDT lesson follows a specific format set by the RSA. Your instructor will explain what the lesson covers, demonstrate the skill, and then guide you through practice.

Topics Covered: Lessons include vehicle controls and safety checks, correct positioning, turning left and right, roundabouts, pedestrian crossings, overtaking, motorway driving, night driving, and more.

Your Logbook: After each lesson, your instructor signs your EDT logbook to confirm completion. You must present this completed logbook when applying for your driving test.

Making the Most of EDT: Practice between lessons whenever possible (with a qualified driver). Take notes after each lesson. Don't be afraid to ask your instructor to repeat anything you're unsure about.
