Winter Driving Tips for Irish Roads

Back to all articles

Winter driving in Ireland presents unique challenges. Shorter days, wet roads, ice, and fog all require extra care and attention behind the wheel.

Before You Drive: Check your tyres have adequate tread depth (minimum 1.6mm, but 3mm is recommended for winter). Ensure all lights are working and your windscreen is clear.

In Rain: Increase your following distance to at least 4 seconds. Use dipped headlights. Reduce speed, especially on bends. Avoid harsh braking or acceleration.

In Fog: Use your fog lights when visibility drops below 100 metres. Drive slowly and use the left-hand edge of the road as a guide. Never use full beam - it reflects off fog and reduces visibility further.

On Ice: If you suspect ice, reduce your speed dramatically. Avoid sudden movements of the steering wheel, brakes, or accelerator. If you do skid, steer gently into the direction of the skid.

General Tips: Plan your journey and allow extra time. Keep your phone charged but don't use it while driving. Let someone know your route and expected arrival time. And if conditions are truly dangerous, consider whether the journey is necessary.
